The light and speedy ceremony focused on award distribution and speeches versus long comedic bits and musical numbers, but there were plenty of unexpected moments. Check out some of the night’s biggest snubs and surprises below. Surprise: Michael B. Jordan nabs best actor away from Timothée Chalamet Although the biggest narrative of award season has been Timothée Chalamet’s quest for an Oscar for “Marty Supreme,” his fellow actors chose to celebrate Jordan’s dual role in “Sinners” instead. After Jordan’s win, “Sinners” went on to win the night’s big ensemble award as well. Popular on Variety Surprise: Michelle Williams’ win for “Dying for Sex” Given the overwhelming awards success of “Adolescence,” it was nice to see Williams’ strong turn in the dramedy get recognition. Surprise: Woody Harrelson’s funny speech to present the Life Achievement Award to Harrison Ford It initially seemed like an odd pairing, but it was fun to see Harrelson’s unconventional, warm and familiar speech for his buddy Ford. Plus, he got to take a few fun shots at the legend — it was a good time! Surprise: Uncensored swearing onstage I’m no puritan, but given the traditional award show trappings, it was strange to hear host Kristen Bell and several winners casually drop f-bombs on Netflix. Surprise: The lighting was terrible Surely all of these beautiful people aren’t so orange and sweaty in real life! Surprise: SAG-AFTRA president Sean Astin praises Ted Sarandos for Netflix’s support of the union It makes sense as the show aired on the streamer, but it was also telling timing, given that contract negotiations are going on. Snubbed: Rhea Seehorn’s work in “Pluribus” While Keri Russell is beloved, it seems like perhaps the “White Lotus” voters split ballots between Parker Posey and Aimee Lou Wood, and sci-fi fans split between Seehorn and “Severance” star Britt Lower, leaving Russell the sole survivor. Surprise: “The Last of Us” wins best stunt ensemble Given it was up against action-heavy final seasons of “Stranger Things,” “Andor,” and “Squid Game,” it’s surprising that the more muted sophomore season of “The Last of Us” was awarded.
