We won't get a new Godzilla movie until November, when Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki unleashes his sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero. But in the meantime, the good folks at Alamo Drafthouse are here to satisfy your kaiju cravings. On March 11, the Sony-owned theater chain announced TohoScope, a collaboration with the studio behind the monster that kicks off in April. First up, Alamo theaters will be screening 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla, followed by 1971's Godzilla vs. Hedorah in May and 1989's Godzilla vs. Biollante in June. But wait, there's more! In a statement announcing the news, Alamo explains: "These aren’t just screenings, they’re full-on monster rituals: custom menus, rare theatrical playdates, and collectible drops you’ll want to clutch like a tiny screaming civilian." Special menu items include Godzilla Punch and Blue Fire cocktails, along with Monster Fries and Boneless King Wings. Each screening will also be an opportunity to buy special merchandise, including T-shirts, a Hedorah pint glass, and kaiju-themed popcorn buckets.
As Toho Kingdom points out, the name TohoScope is a specific reference to the aspect ratio used by Toho during its Shōwa era (1954-1975), known for its campy style and Godzilla's role as a protector of Earth rather than its destroyer. However, the movies being featured extend beyond that string of kaiju classics, so the final movie in this series could literally be anything Toho has to offer.
