British alt rock group Basement have emerged from the musical abyss by announcing their first new album in eight years, plus, they’ve shared two new songs and tour dates.
The band’s new album, WIRED, arrives May 8th via Run For Cover Records — a meaningful reunion with their original label. The 12-track project promises a return to the “unbridled passion and creative intuition that’s always animated their best material,” according to a press release.

WIRED is the product of Basement’s members becoming disillusioned with the music industry. In a press release, vocalist Andre Fisher said of the group’s time off to recalibrate a few years ago, “We were all left with a really weird, sour taste in our mouth after signing to a major label and having all these people control things.” When they came together to start writing again, the seeds of WIRED were born.

Basement’s two glimpses of what to expect on WIRED have been released: the title track and “Broken By Design.” On the former, a towering hook and urgent guitars channel the energy that Basement have made an epic career out of. The latter finds Basement leaping in the opposite direction for a moodier, more gentle tune. Equally as captivating, but for different reasons. Listen to each track below.

Fisher spoke about the meaning of both songs in a statement. “‘WIRED’ is about how sometimes it feels that we are set up to feel and behave in certain ways beyond our control,” he says about the title song in the press release. “That no matter how hard you try to hide it, eventually it will come out – either by choice or by force.”
“This song was almost lost – a few of us were into it, but it sort of lost traction for a bit,” he detailed about the song’s creation. “Then one day it cropped back up and we put it at the forefront of our minds and it ended up being one of my favourite songs to perform and record.”
In his explanation about “Broken By Design,” Fisher revealed that it’s “about giving something your absolute best and realising it’s destined to fail. Getting to the other side of the situation, looking back and deciding to do everything differently and feeling grateful for the opportunity to grow. We’ve all done a lot of work on getting better at talking to each other as friends and as band mates.”
