The world premiere of On Native Land, produced by Raven Theatre in collaboration with Urban Ink, comes to The Cultch this April. Audiences will dive into the heart of contemporary Indigenous narratives with this new musical intertwining the lives of a lawyer, a Chief and a rising singer-songwriter. These three seemingly disparate characters’ paths converge in a sweeping, powerful tale of land and identity.
Corey Payette is known for bridging ancestral and modern tonalities. His work has been compared to Broadway hits Company and Dear Evan Hansen. But Payette’s contemporary scores have a driving force rooted in the drum, grounding the music in Indigenous tradition.
Timeless yet boldly innovative at the same time, On Native Land challenges the idea of what musicals can and should be. Payette’s talents as an award-winning storyteller in theatre and film shine as bright as ever. His previous works, Children of God, Les Filles du Roi and Starwalker, all premiered at The Cultch and went on to receive national and international acclaim. The Cultch is proud to collaborate with Payette, Urban Ink and Raven Theatre once again.
On Native Land runs from April 8 to 19 at the York Theatre in Vancouver. In celebration of its premiere, Tyee readers are invited to enter to win two tickets to a show of their choice, plus a $25 gift card to Social (1812 Commercial Dr). To learn more about the show and how to save on tickets, including pay-what-you-choose previews, community pricing and Indigenous ticket offers, visit The Cultch's website.
