Corpse Knight Gunther Vol 1 by Mayo-Nuguri Manhwa Review
“Corpse Knight Gunther” is a webtoon originally published on platforms like WEBTOON and Naver, where it received glowing reviews from both fans and critics. Yen Press has since released a print version, so far covering the first two volumes. Buy This Titleby clicking on the image below As expected, the war between humans and vampires has ended with the victory of the vampires, who proceed to eradicate what remains of humanity after killing their King. In an effort to strike back, human refugees in the Holy Land of Bahal successfully create an undying Corpse Knight, Gunther, using the body of a gladiator who had never lost a fight. In order to function, Gunther must be attached to a power source that can sustain him, which turns out to be a human named Arien, effectively used as a living battery. There are also a number of other limitations to his functionality, particularly regarding how long he can remain active. Nevertheless, the Corpse Knight proves more powerful than common vampires, even if somewhat slower, and he can attach various weapons to his limbs. The volume opens with him fighting a group of vampires, yet the narrative soon shifts backwards, returning to his first day as the Corpse Knight and his initial encounters with Arien and General Rainer, who oversees the project behind his creation. After realizing his new purpose, albeit somewhat unwillingly, the former gladiator finds himself facing a high ranking vampire, Benzel, whose body is grotesquely composed of the faces of the humans he has killed. This confrontation occupies the majority of the 290 pages of the manhwa, turning the battle into both spectacle and character study. The first aspect one notices is the impressive artwork, with the dominant combination of black and red adding significantly to the depiction of violence and the intense movement that defines most sequences. Blood splatters frequently across the pages, while the grotesque design of Benzel, along with the unsettling image of Gunther as a reconstructed body animated through mechanical additions, enhances the pervasive sense of brutality. In this context, the character design stands on a particularly high level, especially through the emphasis on facial expressions. MAYO NUGURI’s prowess is evident throughout, and nowhere more so than in the many faces that comprise Benzel’s body. Equally striking is the portrayal of movement, as the dynamic paneling combined with visualized sound effects results in sequences that could easily be adapted into anime form. The setting is clearly medieval, yet beyond the relentless action, which dominates much of the book, MAYO NUGURI incorporates elements of both drama and comedy. The dramatic dimension emerges primarily from Gunther’s fate and Arien’s exploitation as a human battery, while Benzel’s backstory, revealed gradually through flashbacks, intensifies the emotional weight. In doing so, the narrative comments on how society values appearances over character and the consequences such superficial judgment can have on those who become its victims. On the other hand, the comedic aspect stems largely from Gunther’s abrasive personality, as he frequently exploits those who revived him and now depend on him, a trait that becomes particularly evident toward the end of the volume. At the same time, the fact that he himself is exploited adds another layer to his attitude, while General Rainer emerges as an opportunistic and cowardly figure. It will be interesting to see how Gunther’s relationship with Arien evolves in the subsequent volumes. Ultimately, “Corpse Knight Gunther” proves to be a highly entertaining manhwa, well drawn and intelligently written, with its bold use of color enhancing the overall presentation. Yen Press has released it in an attractive print edition, featuring glossy paper and a slightly larger format than their standard manga releases, which further elevates the quality of the publication.
