Figure skaters Reinard Lotz and Mia Schutte weren’t expecting to be on the podium so early in their competitive careers, but that’s where they found themselves at the Saskatchewan Winter Games. The 13-year-old Lotz and 12-year-old Schutte only began skating together a few months ago before teaming up for a shot at the 2026 Winter Games in Meadow Lake and Flying Dust First Nation. The pairs figure skaters finished with a silver medal in the Star 4/5 Pattern Dance event. “A season, maybe? Not even a season,” Schutte said when asked how long they had practiced together before the Games. “We were really happy (with the result).” “We didn’t think we were going to get silver,” Lotz added. The duo were two of four Prince Albert Skating Club skaters who competed in this year’s Games. The event was hampered by poor weather conditions, but overall, both skaters were glad to have the experience. “The Winter Games were pretty fun,” Lotz said. “It was a pretty good experience for me and Mia, and hopefully we can go there again.” “They were really, really cold (but) the classrooms were really, really cool,” Schutte added. Schutte did double duty at the games, competing with Lotz in the 4/5 Dance Mix while also skating in the Star 5 Women Freeskate, where she came seventh. Fellow Lakeland skater and Porcupine Plain product Parker Jazlyn Belchamber took home the gold. Prince Albert Skating Club coach Carla Jenkins said there are a couple of different competitive streams skaters can take during their developmental years. While Jenkins couldn’t attend the Winter Games, she said the it’s a great opportunity for skaters. Evita Ford and Kole Boyko were the other two Prince Albert Skate Club members to compete at the Games. Ford finished 14th in the Star 6 Free Skate Female competition, while Boyko came fourth in the Star 6 Men Free Program. With the Saskatchewan Games behind them, all four skaters will take part in the Prince Albert Skating Club’s year-end show at the Art Hauser Centre. Schutte and Lotz are approaching the show with the same enthusiasm they bring to a competition. “It’s really fun, and also I really love the song we’re doing,” Schutte said with a smile. The year-end show begins at 2 p.m. on March 15. @kerr_jas • jason.kerr@paherald.sk.ca -Advertisement-
