The Netflix limited series adaptation of “Enigma Variations” has officially been greenlit, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson set for the lead role.
The TV version of “Call Me by Your Name” author André Aciman’s novel was originally reported to be in the works at the streamer in January 2025, though Jeremy Allen White was originally attached to play the lead role of Paul at that time.
Now, fellow three name actor Taylor-Johnson will take on the part, with A.K. Shulman attached to write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner. Oliver Hermanus will direct and executive produce. Media Res is the studio, with Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive producing on behalf of the company. Aciman will executive produce as well alongside Monica Levinson.

The official logline states that the show follows Paul, “a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him across ten transformative years. It’s an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love—and in a world of endless choices, it asks the question: will we know when we’ve found the one?”
This will be one of the few TV roles that Taylor-Johnson has taken on in his career. He is primarily known as a film actor, having starred in features like “Nocturnal Animals,” the “Kick Ass” films, “Tenet,” and “The King’s Man.” He also appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Pietro Maximoff, while his recent credits include Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu,” “The Fall Guy” with Ryan Gosling, “Kraven the Hunter,” and “28 Years Later.” He is reteaming with Eggers on the upcoming film “Werwulf.”
Shuman was most recently a writer and executive producer on the Amazon epic fantasy series “The Wheel of Time.” She has also worked on shows like “Berlin Station,” “Tell Me Your Secrets,” “The Blacklist,” and “Chuck.”
Media Res’ current slate includes the Apple TV+ shows “The Morning Show” and “Pachinko.” They also have several upcoming series in the works, including “The Miniature Wife” at Peacock starring Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen, “The Dealer” at Apple TV starring Jessica Chastain and Adam Driver, and the HBO series “The Chain” from Damon Lindelof.
Taylor-Johnson is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, WME, Sloan Offer, and Shelter PR. Shuman is repped by UTA and Hansen Jacobson. Levinson is repped by CAA.
