First Look at Augmented Reality Horror Movie 'Near Death' [Exclusive] - Bloody Disgusting
Alex MacNicoll in 'Near Death' Augmented reality turns deadly in Near Death, and we have an exclusive first look at stills and the poster for the indie horror film from Liminal Space Pictures. Writer-director Shaina Aidan makes her feature debut with a disturbing exploration of reality, identity, and the cost of technological ambition. It follows a Silicon Valley engineer who invites his closest friends to a secluded mountain cabin for what’s meant to be a laid-back 30th birthday getaway — and a private demo of his revolutionary augmented reality prototype. When the technology malfunctions, the celebration transforms into a relentless fight for survival, blurring the line between perception and reality as the group spirals into an escalating nightmare. Alex MacNicoll (“The Society”), Olivia Rose Prince (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), David A. Chang, Del Eswar, Paige Hapeman, Harrison Xu (“American Horror Stories”), and Ivan Leung (Skillhouse) star. Blending paranoid tension, psychological horror, and high-concept sci-fi dread, Near Death explores modern fears of surveillance, digital dependence, and humanity’s obsession with conquering mortality — all while delivering a nerve-shredding survival thriller. “I was filled with a sense of existential dread around dying, aging, and the unchecked expansion of technology,” Aidan tells Bloody Disgusting. “The goal of Near Death is to bring to life the true horrors of what humans are capable of creating in an attempt to control what can’t be controlled: death.” Shot on location in Lake Tahoe, CA, Near Death is deep in post-production as it gears up for a 2026 festival circuit launch.
