The Kelowna Fire Department got controlled a "runaway" battery Thursday morning. Fire crews were called to BNA Brewing on Ellis Ave. just before 8:30 a.m. When they arrived, they could smell smoke and followed the trail to a small, portable battery. A spokesperson for the Kelowna Fire Department says the battery was a small Milwaukee portable battery. "The battery experienced what is known as 'thermal runaway,' a condition where the battery's internal temperature increases rapidly and uncontrollably. The condition can lead to a dangerous, self-sustaining chain reaction where increasing temperature causes even faster heat generation, leading to uncontrolled overheating, smoke, fire, or explosions. "This can lead to the release of heat, smoke, and sometimes fire, making quick and careful intervention essential," says the email response from KFD. The fire crews had to respond quickly and with specialized techniques in order to prevent the fire from spreading. "Our fire crews responded swiftly and managed the situation using containment measures specifically designed for incidents involving small batteries." "Their prompt actions ensured the fire was safely controlled, with only limited smoke impact, which was mitigated by KFD Firefighters," says the KFD spokesperson. A similar 'thermal runaway,' battery situation forced the evacuation and eventual complete closure of Ellis Place supportive housing facility on Jan. 7. The residents of that building have now been told the building will not be habitable for some time.
