Lily Rabe has spent much of her career wading through the darker corners of television and theater — from the long-running intensity of American Horror Story to heavy dramatic stage roles. But lately she’s found a different kind of playground on Apple TV’s Shrinking, where she plays Meg, the daughter of Harrison Ford’s character. As Season 3 unfolds, Rabe’s character continues to open up in surprising ways, especially through her evolving relationship with Jason Segel’s Jimmy. Rabe recently spoke with Kyle Meredith about the new season, discovering Meg’s emotional arc as the show develops, and the unexpected joy of finally getting to flex her comedy muscles. Rabe admits that when she first signed on to the show, the long-term direction for Meg wasn’t completely mapped out. “I did in the earlier seasons know that this was a possibility,” she says of the storyline that’s been unfolding between Meg and Jimmy. “I wasn’t by any means blindsided… it wasn’t like I turned the page and gasped.” In fact, the dynamic grew organically as the series progressed. “I actually think they felt there was something happening that then became breadcrumbs as opposed to the other way around,” she explains, suggesting that the writers leaned into the chemistry between characters once they saw it on screen.
That evolving dynamic fits neatly into the emotional architecture of the series, where therapy and relationships constantly intersect. Rabe points out that Meg and Jimmy are connected in ways that go beyond a typical workplace or family dynamic. “She’s really Paul’s daughter… in every sense,” Rabe says, referring to Ford’s character. “There’s a tremendously deep connection between Paul and Jimmy. So it’s not that surprising that Jimmy and Meg would have some kind of connection.” The actor also relished getting to trade scenes with the show’s comedy heavyweights. “I know Jason Segel is a great comedian, but to me he’s just a great actor,” she says. “When you’re with other great actors, you’re just telling the truth in the world that you’re in.”
