The series is being unveiled at Hong Kong FilMart. Configured as a 10-episode run at 45 minutes per episode, the project is the first in a wave of international remakes Nippon TV has lined up for the format. His Mirror bandmate Alton Wong — who took home an acting prize at the Ace Face of Hong Kong Star Awards — and Error member Dee Ho round out the trio, in parts first played by Kamiki Ryunosuke and Nakano Taiga, respectively. The sisterly duo at the heart of the other storyline, originated by Arimura Kasumi and Furukawa Kotone, will be played by Hanna Chan and Vanora Hui, each a previous best new performer nominee at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Popular on Variety The original “Life’s Punchline” (10 x 60′) centers on a comedy trio whose decade-long bid for fame ends in dissolution when the three members turn 28 — penniless and adrift as friends their age settle into careers and family life. Woven into their story is a young woman who works at a diner and has been their most devoted follower. A high achiever undone by burnout, she shares a home with her sibling as both try to piece their lives back together. The trio’s continued performances become an unexpected source of strength for the two women, and the five characters collectively find a path forward. A distinguishing formal device of the series is a comedy sketch staged by the main cast at the top of each episode, a self-contained performance that gradually threads into the overarching drama. The show aired in Japan in 2021 and generated close to 14 million VOD views in its first 10 weeks on demand. Behind the camera, the remake is overseen by executive producer Lorraine Ho, whose producing credits span more than 100 films and include “Infernal Affairs,” “Initial D” and “Love in a Puff.” The scripts are led by Loong Man Hong, who won best screenplay at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards for his work on “Trivisa.” Andy Lo, whose features include “Happiness” and “In Geek We Trust” and who claimed best director at the Asian Film Festival Barcelona, directs. “This story of youth and resilience resonated deeply in Japan, capturing the struggle between dreams and reality while proving that passion is never defined by success or failure,” said Xinrui Yang, sales and licensing at Nippon TV’s content business and distribution division. “We are confident that MakerVille’s exceptional team and cast will create a remake that is just as moving and impactful for local and global audiences.” Kenneth Kam, CEO of MakerVille, added: “MakerVille has long been dedicated to fostering the development of the creative industry. We are delighted to have obtained the rights to produce the Hong Kong adaptation of ‘Life’s Punchline,’ and we look forward to bringing even more world-class creative content to audiences in Hong Kong.” Nippon TV, which owns streaming giant Hulu in Japan, holds full IP rights to nearly 90% of its content. The company’s scripted format “Mother” holds the distinction, by Nippon TV’s account, of being the Asian series with the most international adaptations, with local versions produced in South Korea, Turkey, Ukraine, Thailand, China, France, Spain, Mongolia, the Philippines, Greece and Saudi Arabia.
