Nicolas Winding Refn's 'Maniac Cop' Remake Will Shoot in the Fall, Says William Lustig - Bloody Disgusting
After a decade in development hell, Nicolas Winding Refn‘s (Drive, The Neon Demon) remake of Maniac Cop may finally be ready to protect and serve. “Nic has it as his next project, that will shoot in the fall,” original Maniac Cop director William Lustig, who is executive producing the remake, told Icons of Fright. First conceived as a feature then reworked as a series for HBO, the new take on the 1988 slasher is once again set up as a feature. “What happened with HBO was, HBO got sold to Discovery, and Discovery — after they’d spent over a million dollars developing the scripts for the series — Discovery says, ‘We’re not in the Maniac Cop business,'” Lustig explains. “They gave all the scripts back to us, so we didn’t have to pay a turnaround, so that was it with HBO,” he continues. “Now it’s moving ahead. I can’t announce the company, but it will become known.” Lusting adds, “It’s sort of like one of these things that’s bouncing around in your head, and you wanna just get it out. I think Nic is at that point. This thing had so many fits and starts. It’s moving ahead and expected to start shooting the fall.” The film was initially set to be directed by John Hyams (Sick, Alone) from a script by comic writer Ed Brubaker (The Winter Soldier) with Refn producing, although it’s unclear if that’s still the case. In the original Maniac Cop, innocent people are brutally killed on the streets of New York by a uniformed police officer. A young cop, Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell), finds himself marked as the chief suspect after his wife is murdered. As Lieutenant Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) investigates, the death toll rises and he suspects a mysterious police cover-up. This maniac cop (Robert Z’Dar) must be stopped, but it might not be so easy. He seems inhuman, and he’s ready to take on the entire police force. Refn’s next film, Her Private Hell, is due out later this year from Neon. The mysterious thriller stars Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, Kristine Froseth, and Havana Rose Liu.
