The Community Foundation of the South Okanagan Similkameen kicked off fundraising with a $10,000 donation Tuesday afternoon. "We've done this because The Dream is a really important cultural cornerstone of our community, and it's really sad to see it closed down, and many members of the community are really working hard to make it come back to life," said Aaron McRann, CFSOS CEO. Now, The Dream Society aims to raise $500,000 ahead of opening slated on Oct. 1, all going towards upgrades and ways to optimize the space. Back in August of last year, The Dream Cafe said it was closing as operating costs under a business model were too high. Due to the for-profit status of the former Dream Cafe coop, previously managers said it was only eligible for one or two grants. The Dream Cafe shuttered its doors in September after 24 years in business. With non-profit status, The Dream Society is introducing a membership-based fundraising model. The aim is to be a community resource that is also powered by community members. Mauws is a former business professor at Alberta’s Athabasca University. He said the non-profit gives The Dream charity status allowing people to submit donations and volunteer in various capacities. Perks of membership include presale tickets, no-fee ticket refunds, and priority access for sold-out shows. "We feel that everybody's always felt like this was a community asset, and now it truly will be. It will belong to the community," Mauws said. Patrons can anticipate an entirely new, yet still intimate, performance experience. "I don't want to alarm people, but we are changing almost everything," Mauws added. "The bathrooms will stay where they were, but we're moving the bar. We're moving the stage. We're actually putting in a second stage so that on the off nights we can have more intimate, small gigs. "We're bringing in top notch acoustics. We're going to have it so that we can film and stream shows, so it'll have the spirit of the old dream cafe. It'll serve kind of the same purpose as the dream cafe, but it's going to be at a higher level than it's ever been before." For more information on how to get involved, check out www.dreamsociety.ca.
