RCMP impound work truck after finding gas cap sealed with plastic bag, charging cordGas cap sealed with bagRob Gibson - Mar 19, 2026 / 4:31 pm | Story: 604493

Fuel cap replaced with sandwich bag secured by charging cable.
Lower Mainland RCMP made some unusual discoveries during a recent vehicle inspection blitz, including a fuel cap replaced with a plastic lunch bag, secured by a charging cable.
The Lower Mainland Commercial Vehicle Enforcement group set up an inspection in Burnaby on February 25.
The inspections were also used to educate commercial truck drivers and enforce the rules of the road.
One of the most serious offenders was a single dump truck and trailer hauling a bobcat.
Inspectors quickly spotted a missing fuel cap sealed with an improvised cover by using a sandwich bag, secured with a charging cable.
The officers also found the fuel tank itself was held to the vehicle by two non-rated straps, one of them damaged and the other being cut through by a broken piece of the tank housing. The original mounting hardware had broken off entirely.
But wait, there's more. The truck had a defective steering mechanism, the trailer's emergency brake was inoperative, and the trailer's axles and wheel housings were bent due to being repeatedly overloaded.
The driver was hit with six violation tickets totalling $1,215 in fines. Both licence plates were seized, and the truck and trailer were towed to a designated inspection facility.
“There are many professional drivers and companies that follow road safety laws. This is clearly not one of them,” said Const.. Kevin Connolly, Burnaby RCMP’s designated commercial vehicle inspector.
“This is not an accurate representation of every commercial vehicle on our roadways, it is, however, a good example of why we do these inspections.”
