Redistricting Places Alaska Firmly in Republican Grip – Alaska Native News

The Senate Bipartisan Coalition fell victim to redistricting in yesterday's election.
Most directly, in southeast, redistricting pitted two coalition members, Senator Albert Kookish (D-Angoon) and Senator Bert Stedman (R-Sitka) in a battle for a single seat. Stedman took that race eliminating the Democratic Senator from the Senate.
Another Democrat member of the coalition, Anchorage’s Bettye Davis was redistricted into a district that includes Eagle River. That restructuring cost Davis her seat in the new, heavily Republican District.
Redistricting saw Fairbanks’ Democrat Senator Joe Thomas placed in the same arena with John Coghill, Thomas was defeated.
Democrat Joe Paskvan was also taken out by Pete Kelly.
With the future of the coalition in doubt, the way opens up for Governor Parnell to push through his $2 billion tax break for the big oil companies in Alaska. The coalition was long a thorn in Parnell’s side as he worked to bring the new tax giveaway home to the oil giants. With the Republicans firmly in control of the governorship and both Houses, Parnell can now move forward with his giveaway plan.
The results of all the Senate races in Alaska can be seen below.
