Avalanche control work has closed Highway 1 through Rogers Pass it will remain closed until 8 p.m. Friday
UPDATE: 5:53 p.m.
The Trans-Canada Highway between Revelstoke and Golden is no longer expected to reopen on Friday.
In a social media post Parks Canada said the highway remains closed today and will not likely reopen by 8 p.m. on Friday, as previously scheduled.
Drivers are advised to avoid travel or plan alternate routes.
"Conditions remain dynamic and can change quickly. Temporary openings will be facilitated if weather and avalanche conditions allow, however this is not guaranteed," Parks Canada stated.
UPDATE: 11:43 a.m.
The Trans-Canada Highway between Revelstoke and Golden will be closed until Friday at about 8 p.m. as avalanche control work continues.
Recent bouts of heavy rain and snow, as well as changing temperatures along the Highway 1 corridor, have resulted in the highest avalanche risk of the year, according to Parks Canada.
This stretch of highway saw an extended closure earlier this week, and was temporarily reopened on Wednesday. The closure resumed Thursday at 6 a.m.
Commercial vehicles going eastbound are being stopped in Malakwa for the duration of the closure. Passenger vehicles can bypass this closure using the Frontage Road to continue to Revelstoke.
Heavy rain expected
A weather advisory for heavy rainfall is also in place for the Rogers Pass and Eagle Pass. The area is expecting between 40 and 70 millimetres of rain between Thursday and Friday night, according to Environment Canada.
Travellers looking to go east are advised to find an alternate route. Highway 93 from Radium Hot Springs to the Alberta border is also closed for avalanche control work and will remain closed until noon on Saturday.
ORIGINAL: 9:27 a.m.
The Trans-Canada Highway will be closed again between Golden and Revelstoke on Thursday as avalanche control work resumes.
Recent snowfall and climbing temperatures has resulted in the need for extensive avalanche control work through Rogers Pass and Eagle Pass, according to Parks Canada.
The closure is expected to last until about 8 p.m.
The highway was originally set to be closed from Tuesday until Thursday, but it was reopened temporarily at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
Travellers are advised to find an alternate route. Highway 93 from Radium Hot Springs to the Alberta border is also closed for avalanche control work and is expected to remain closed until Saturday, March 21 at 12 p.m.
Weather advisory in place
A weather advisory has also been issued for this same stretch of Highway 1 due to heavy amounts of rainfall forecasted to begin Thursday and continue until Friday evening.
Environment Canada said between 40 and 70 millimetres of rain are expected to fall through Rogers Pass and Eagle Pass due to an atmospheric river affecting southern B.C.
Motorists are advised rain is likely to pool on the highway and in low-lying areas and could cause delays.
