Presented by Quentin Tarantino, Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA brings da ruckus with the One Spoon of Chocolate trailer.
Deadline has learned that the revenge thriller will hit theaters on May 1 via RZA’s newly launched 36 Cinema Distribution, in partnership with Variance Films.
The film will be presented in 35mm for select engagements, including a two-week run at Los Angeles’ Vista Theatre.
It follows Unique, a veteran and ex-convict seeking a fresh start in a small town. After an altercation with a gang of locals, he starts to suspect they may have something to do with the disappearance of young men in the area – including his cousin.
As he digs for the truth, he finds himself the target of not only the gang, but the local sheriff’s office, whose involvement in the disappearances may be even more sinister. Instead of waiting for his turn to be picked off, Unique and those closest to him decide to fight back.
Shameik Moore, Blair Underwood, RJ Cyler, Paris Jackson, Emyri Crutchfield, Michael Harney, and Harry Goodwins star.
RZA wrote and directed the film, heavily influenced by martial arts and exploitation cinema. He also produces alongside Paul Hall and Talani R. Diggs.
“My new film, RZA’s One Spoon of Chocolate, is my fourth feature film as a director,“ said RZA. “It embodies my journey as a filmmaker, to date, mixing action, drama, thrills, and substance. The first draft started over 13 years ago, and wasn’t completed until 2023. After two years of filmmaking, we are ready to show this film to the audience. I believe this film is best suited for theaters because theaters capture our imagination while holding our attention.”
He continued, “At its core, RZA’s One Spoon of Chocolate is a story of a young man’s journey to better his life’s circumstances, while everything around him is shaken. All of our journeys revolve around the choices we make and how we choose to live with them. The film is both timeless and timely. Get ready for thrills, chills, and some bone-cracking action, followed by a spoonful of thought provoking substance.”
“As a filmmaker, RZA really brought home the bacon on an old-school, foot-to-ass, Revenge-a-matic!” added Tarantino. “This picture drives audiences wild wherever it screens. We’ll sell you a whole seat, but you’ll only use the edge of it.”
Moving forward, 36 Cinema Distribution will handle feature distribution of new releases and classic titles for both traditional theatrical runs as well as event screenings. Additional titles are currently being lined up.
