Up first is Black Zombie, a documentary directed by Maya Annik Bedward that premieres at SXSW in Texas this weekend. From the flickering screens of Hollywood horror to the haunted cane fields of colonial Haiti, Black Zombie unearths the buried origins of the zombie, reclaiming it as a symbol of survival and spiritual resistance. It features insight from Slash, special effects legend Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead) and author Tananarive Due (The Reformatory), along with Yves-Grégory Francois, Anderson Mojica, Erol Josué, Mambo Labelle Déese Botanica, and Zandashé Brown. “I’ve always believed horror reflects the fears and truths buried in society,” said Slash. “Black Zombie uncovers the real origins behind one of horror’s most iconic figures, and I’m proud to help bring that story forward.” Then there’s Sundown, a vampire feature that recently wrapped production in Winnipeg. It follows three generations of women who reunite in a remote cabin to avenge a loved one’s death, only to discover their captive isn’t who he seems to be and his family is closing in, waiting for sundown. Rebekah McKendry directs from a script by Joshua Hull and David Ian McKendry. The trio previously collaborated on Glorious.
