If you were curious as to just who you’ll be playing as in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, Sony may have inadvertently muddied the waters. As part of International Women’s Day, Sony dedicated a section of their website to “the daring and defiant women who made their mark on the world of gaming.” In doing so, they had apparently revealed the identity of Belmont’s Curse‘s protagonist.
The key word is “had,” as they’ve now gone back and done a bit of revision after the “reveal”.
Originally, the website listed the protagonist as none other than Sonia Belmont, who fans last saw in the 1997 Game Boy title Castlevania: Legends. Coming out just after Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Legends is infamous for its original intention to be the origin of the Belmont bloodline…with Alucard being involved. Needless to say, once Koji Igarashi took over the series, he declared the game’s happenings non-canon, as it conflicted with the main series’ plot.
However, it now appears that Sony may have jumped the gun, as they’ve now updated the listing, removing all reference to Sonia. The listing now refers to the character as “Trevor Belmont’s successor”. The question is, did Sony spoil what Konami was intending to reveal themselves? Until Konami puts out their own statement, we’re left to speculate.
Co-developed by Evil Empire and Motion Twin, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is due out later this year to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, the Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, marking the series’ 40th anniversary later this year.
