The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has been officially distinguished as an “A-Festival” by the Fédération Internationale des Associations des Producteurs de Films (FIAPF), marking a significant recognition of the festival’s international impact and operational excellence. The designation places TIFF among the most influential film festivals in the world and highlights its growing role within the global film industry.
FIAPF, the leading international organization representing film producers worldwide, oversees the accreditation and regulation of international film festivals while promoting the development of the global film production sector. In addition to protecting copyright structures and creative content, the organization ensures that festivals adhere to standards of quality, transparency, and reliability across the industry.
The recognition comes following FIAPF’s recent overhaul of its accreditation system, which introduced a more streamlined and forward-looking framework designed to reflect the evolving needs of the international film landscape. The updated system replaces the previous four-category model with a single unified list of accredited festivals. It also adopts a programming-agnostic approach, removing distinctions based on format, genre, or curatorial model, while reinforcing trust between festivals and the wider film industry. As part of the new framework, accredited festivals now provide annual quantitative and qualitative data, highlighting their contributions to cinema and the broader industry.
Under the revised system, six new festivals were added to the FIAPF-accredited list, which now includes 49 events across 29 countries and five continents. Within this global network, festivals demonstrating the highest level of international impact are distinguished as “A-Festivals.” The distinction is determined through a databased evaluation system that analyzes both quantitative and qualitative data submitted by participating festivals.
Based on its performance and results in 2024 and 2025, TIFF was recognized for its high operational standards, international presence, and industry engagement, securing its place among the festivals awarded the prestigious A-Festival designation. The recognition further strengthens the festival’s standing as one of Asia’s leading cinematic events and a key platform connecting filmmakers, producers, and audiences from around the world.
FIAPF has also launched a publicly accessible database presenting key facts and figures from all accredited festivals. Available on the organization’s official website, the platform aims to serve as a central reference point for navigating the global festival circuit and understanding the role of individual events within the international film ecosystem.
With this new accreditation, the Tokyo International Film Festival reaffirms its commitment to supporting filmmakers and fostering international collaboration while continuing to strengthen its contribution to the global film industry.
