The trailer for “I Heard That They Are Not Going To See Each Other Anymore,” the debut feature by Hong Kong-born filmmaker Ka Ki Wong, has been unveiled ahead of the production’s world premiere at the CPH:DOX. The hybrid documentary will screen as part of the festival’s NEXT:WAVE Competition during the 2026 edition, which takes place from March 11 to 22 in Copenhagen.
Produced by Ping Film Production, the work will have its first public screening on March 14 at 19:00 CET at DFI / Cinemateket. The newly released trailer offers an early glimpse into the distinctive visual and narrative world of Wong’s debut, which explores fragile human connections through a blend of documentary realism and staged performance.
Set in present-day Taipei, the narrative follows Tao, a young woman who develops an inexplicable and obsessive affection for an emotionally distant man named Shin. In a strange attempt to forge a lasting bond, Tao sends people to beat him up, believing that shared pain might create memories strong enough to bind them together. As their unusual relationship deepens, Shin suddenly disappears, leaving Tao struggling to understand whether their connection was ever real.
Running parallel to Tao’s story is the experience of Melih, a man who has left Istanbul behind to run a noodle shop in Taipei. One night, he unexpectedly receives a flower from Yu-ping, a perpetually intoxicated man whose gestures appear both enigmatic and sincere. The moment triggers a series of dreams and reflections in Melih, who begins speaking to the flower as if it were a confidant, recounting the story of Tao and Shin while confronting his own difficulties in forming meaningful relationships.
Through these intersecting narratives, Wong crafts a meditation on loneliness, desire, and the fragile ways people attempt to connect in contemporary urban life. According to the director, the project intentionally blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction.
“Tao’s unrequited love, and Melih and Ping’s fragile grip on connection and memory, mirror the vulnerability of contemporary city life,” Wong explains. “By asking actors to share and re-enact their own experiences without revealing where reality ends and performance begins, the work merges verité, fiction, and confession. In doing so, it becomes a kind of therapeutic space, inviting audiences to confront their own inner struggles and desires.”
“I Heard That They Are Not Going To See Each Other Anymore” was produced by Ping-chia Chen and Ka Ki Wong for Ping Film Production, with Yeung King Lun serving as executive producer. International sales are handled by INDOX.
The upcoming premiere at CPH:DOX marks the first international showcase for Wong’s feature debut, positioning the filmmaker among the emerging voices highlighted in the festival’s NEXT:WAVE section, which focuses on bold new talents and innovative approaches to nonfiction storytelling.
