(Black Press Media file photo) A Silent Ocean, a virtual movie night hosted by the North Island – Powell River (NIPR) Green Party is coming to a computer near you this March 28, 2026. Two short films are being shown and both are by west coast Canadian filmmakers. The first, It’s Time to Listen (2020), is a 7-minute exploration of how whales respond to a quieter underwater world and produced by the Hakai Institute. Stand (2018), a 45-minute film by Anthony Bonello and Nicolas Teichrob, follows local adventurer Norm Hann as he paddleboards along the east coast of Haida Gwaii with visits to Haisla, Bella Bella and Tofino. The focus of the evening is to raise awareness of coastal concerns and encourage an open discussion around the building of a pipeline through Northern B.C. to the north coast for shipping across the Pacific Ocean. It is also meant to raise the issue of who will look out for the ocean that surrounds the Island. Following the screening, there will be a question and answer panel, hosted by Jessica Wegg. The panelists include Shane Pollard, Guardian Manager, We Wai Kai Nation; Katarina Duke, Manager of Marine Conservation and Fisheries, Ka:yu:’k’t’h’ / Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations and Cory Cliffe, Wei Wai Kum First Nation, Founder, 7 Generations Stewards Society. The public is invited to virtually attend this free event and bring both their popcorn and questions.
