Advertisement Directed by James Mackel, the video sees Styles as an actor on a film set, taking on the role of the hero with help from two stunt doubles. In a high-octane series of events, the pop star embarks on a cross-country motorcycle journey, manoeuvres a sports car underneath a semi truck, runs through a desert landscape carefully avoiding landmines, and does an impressive motorcycle flip against the backdrop of the sunset. Speaking to Zane Lowe ahead of the album’s release, Styles said that ‘American Girls’ was “actually quite a lonely song in a lot of ways”, and added it was about watching his three closest friends get married.
