Yoshi and the Mysterious Book new game and release date announced on Mario Day of all days
Sign in to your Polygon account Today may be Mario Day, but it's Yoshi's week. On Monday, a new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie revealed Donald Glover voices the egg-pooping dinosaur in the upcoming film. And on Tuesday morning, Yoshi's next star turn in a video game received a new trailer as well as a May release date. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a 2D platformer that sees Yoshi investigating the pages of a living encyclopedia named Mr. E and cataloging the creatures he discovers therein. He learns about them, of course, by swallowing them up and pooping out an egg. As showcased in the "Creature Discovery!" trailer, what Yoshi learns via its taste buds pops up on screen; the creature in the trailer apparently has a bitter, soap-like taste. After Yoshi's done researching a creature, it's time to name it, and, oh boy, y'all are gonna have a field day with that, aren't you? Give a gamer the ability to name something in a game, and they're going to exhaust Wikipedia's running list of English swear words. I can only assume Yoshi and the Mysterious Book's automatic censors will be stricter than the recent Nintendo Switch ports of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Yoshi asks for a suggestion from Mr. E in the trailer, and Mr. E names the creature Glubbit. Tame, but fitting. Nintendo also revealed a May 21 release date for Yoshi's next adventure, making it May's Nintendo Switch 2 book club pick. Yoshi got the spotlight on Mario Day after a new trailer for (bear with me) Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park had already dropped. The update for Switch 2 will be released March 26. And if you were wondering, today is Mario Day, not because March 10 holds any significance in the Mushroom Kingdom, but because the date smashed together in all caps (MAR10) kind of looks like the mustachioed mascot's name. Mario Day 2026 brought new Mario additions to Nintendo Classics as well as deals on Mario games. Also announced was a new Lego Luigi, because even on Mario Day, Nintendo's other characters deserve some love.
